In Alaska, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont and Washington, marijuana is legal for recreational use. In California, D.C., and Michigan, it is legal for medical use.
The rules vary from state to state. In some, you can buy marijuana at a dispensary; in others, you can only grow it at home. In some, you can smoke it in public; in others, you can’t.
The federal government still considers marijuana to be a Schedule I drug, meaning it has no accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. That means that, technically, using marijuana is still illegal under federal law. But the federal government has said it will not enforce the law in states where marijuana is legal for recreational or medical use.

The short answer is yes, you can buy recreational in Chicago. However, there are some restrictions on where you can buy it.
Only licensed dispensaries are allowed to sell recreational marijuana in Chicago. There are currently only 18 licensed dispensaries in the city, so you may have to travel a bit to find one.
