How many CLE credits do I need in Ohio?

In Ohio, attorneys are required to complete Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credits in order to maintain their law licenses. The number of CLE credits required varies depending on the attorney’s age and experience. 

All attorneys are required to complete 12 CLE credits every two years. Of those 12 credits, six must be in the area of professional responsibility. 

Attorneys who are licensed for less than five years are required to complete 18 CLE credits every two years. Of those 18 credits, nine must be in the area of professional responsibility. 

Attorneys who are licensed for more than five years but have not completed the mandatory CLE hours required for those who are licensed for less than five years are required to complete 24 CLE credits every two years. Of those 24 credits, twelve must be in the area of professional responsibility.

How many CLE hours can I carry over in Ohio?

In Ohio, attorneys are allowed to carry over a certain number of CLE hours from one year to the next. 

Attorneys are allowed to carry over a total of 12 CLE hours from one year to the next. 

CLE hours must be earned in the year they are earned and cannot be carried over from one year to the next. 

Attorneys must complete 24 CLE hours every three years. 

Out-of-state attorneys are allowed to carry over a total of 12 CLE hours from one year to the next. 

CLE hours must be earned in the year they are earned and cannot be carried over from one year to the next.
