As of November 2018, 10 US states and Washington D.C. have legalized marijuana for recreational use. In this article, we take a look at each of these states and what you need to know about their marijuana laws.

Alaska

Retail sales of marijuana are not yet legal in Maine, but are expected to commence in 2019.

Massachusetts

Massachusetts became the sixth US state to legalize recreational marijuana in November 2016. Adults aged 21 and over are allowed to possess up to 1 ounce of marijuana, and consume it in private residences. Retail sales of marijuana are expected to commence in July 2018.

Michigan

Michigan became the tenth US state to legalize recreational marijuana in November 2018. Adults aged 21 and over are allowed to possess up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana, and consume it in private residences. Retail sales of marijuana are not yet legal in Michigan, but are expected to commence in 2020.

Nevada

Nevada became the fifth US state to legalize recreational marijuana in November 2016. Adults aged 21 and over are allowed to possess up to 1 ounce of marijuana, and consume it in private residences. Retail sales of marijuana commenced in July 2017.

Oregon

Oregon was one of the first two US states to legalize recreational marijuana, back in 2012. Adults aged 21 and over are allowed to possess up to 8 ounces of marijuana, and consume it in private residences. Retail sales of marijuana are legal in Oregon, and commenced in October 2015.

Washington

Washington was one of the first two US states to legalize recreational marijuana, back in 2012. Adults aged 21 and over are allowed to possess up to 8 ounces of marijuana, and consume it in private residences. Retail sales of marijuana are legal in Washington, and commenced in July 2014.

Washington D.C.
