As of January 1, 2020, marijuana is legal for recreational use in 11 states and the District of Columbia. A map of these states is shown below.

The first state to legalize recreational marijuana was Colorado in 2012. Since then, the number of states legalizing marijuana has gradually increased. In November 2018, Michigan became the 10th state to legalize recreational marijuana, and in December 2018, Utah and Missouri became the latest states to legalize marijuana for medical use.

The map below shows the states that have legalized recreational marijuana as of January 1, 2020.

The states in green have legalized recreational marijuana, while the states in yellow have legalized marijuana for medical use only.

The states in red have not legalized marijuana for either recreational or medical use.

As you can see, the majority of the states that have legalized marijuana are in the western part of the country. However, there are also a few states on the East Coast that have legalized marijuana, including Massachusetts and Vermont.
